It is almost impossible to get in at the first press conference held after the ‘expected’ attack in Karachi. When Benazir Bhutto starts to talk she almost challenges Pervez Musharraf’s Government and confuses everyone: ‘We’ve warned them. We caught someone carrying bombs approaching the convoy. We notified the authorities but they did nothing’. Days before the ‘state emergency’ announced on November 3rd, two queens try to run the same nation.
Governor of Karachi Dr. Ishad Jilanee accepted to be interviewed exclusively by Hurriyet along with New York Times. In this country where being Turkish makes you half Pakistani, I continued to be an unbiased witness. The striking statement of the Governor of Sindh was: ‘Pervez Musharraf had stated that he didn’t find the return of Benazir Bhutto to Pakistanprior to the elections appropriate in terms of her safety. The security that was provided to her during the attack at Karachi, was the same security that would be provided to government officials. Even President Bush would be subject to same kind of security. What else could we do? A written notice informed us that from now on she will not announce her plans and she will take care of security on her own’…
There is tension in the air.
Pervez Musharraf tried to keep rebellious Benazir under control.. He was unsuccessful.
So, where is democracy heading to…
