Emma Thompson talked about the latest movie that she wrote, and played in, Nanny Mc Phee and the Big Band to our reporter Aysegul Ekinci.
AE: How easy, or hard is it to be in the movie business after 50?
Emma T: Let me tell you this much. Life is easier after 50. In every way. You prove yourself until you are 50 in your career. If you couldn’t put yourself out there until 50, then it’s hard. For me, life got easier at 50. I don’t feel pressured to prove myself anymore.
I can’t say the same thing for love. It’s very risky to fall in love after forty. You can get over heart breaks easier when you are young. But that changes as you get more mature. You can be hard on yourself and question yourself.
AE: Being a mother, having a career, taking care of yourself, your household. These don’t seem easy. Those who say they can do it all, seem fake to me. You have a child too. And I’m sure you are very busy. Do you get help?
EmmaT: I agree with you hundred percent. It’s not easy to handle all of that without help. Of course I get help. I spare enough time for my child but I have priorities. It’s not possible to do all of this and to create with a solid mind.
AE: How do you prepare for your roles?
EmmaT: I find movies to be very exciting. I feel I can express myself really good in movies. I don’t have a special recipe for that. I like strong stories. I don’t like to play people who give in to challenges of life.
