AEkinci: Your show at the Oscars marked your name in Hollywood. How was it to do such a show in front of millions?
Hugh Jackman: Are you kidding me? Imagine if I fell in front of all those people, it would be end of my career! Many around me, including my wife, told me that this show was very risky. Both in terms of performance and hosting the ceremony. They warned me not to accept the offer. But I’m fearless. So I worked day and night to make the best show possible. I believed in it. That’s all.
AEkinci: You said you were brave. I’m sure your life is full of stories. I’m not asking about your private life but do you have a brave moment from your acting days?
Hugh Jackman: Nice question. Because my life is filled with those stories. The first one that comes to my mind is from X-Men. I was playing Wolverine. I trained a lot of martial arts for that character. I watched Clint Eastwood and Mike Tyson. I didn’t want to use extras in the scenes. During the first 3-4 weeks, I felt I was going to get fired. I even waited to be fired at any moment. But I kept on insisting not to use extras in the scenes. At the end: I did not get fired!! I worry before the projects. But afterwards I start to fight.
AEkinci: You say you got famous later. How do you like it?
Hugh Jackman: Being famous didn’t change me. If you start to feel like the leading man, it might be dangerous. If the attention you can decreases, that might affect your mood. You might become upset and hurt those around you.
AEkinci: How do you see yourself as an actor?
Hugh Jackman: I’m not just a method actor. I like to analyze the characters I play and to build that character. I research my character. I play from my heart, instead of doing what I’m told to do.
